CATCON 1

1. What is CATCON ?
CATCON is the name of a software contest organized by the ISPRS Commission VI working group 2: Computer Assisted Teaching (CAT) in 1996.
The main objective of the contest was to promote the development and dissemination of good/user-friendly software packages, WWW contents as well as data sets for computer assisted teaching. In general, the software or dataset is prefer to be non-commercial and prefer to be provided to the users on free of charge.

2. How was CATCON1
The CATCON1 took place on July 12, 1996 at the 18th ISPRS Congress in Vienna.
Total of eleven software/datasets were nominated. After the official presentations by the nominators to the jury, individual demonstrations were followed. More than 100 people visited the demo room to try the nominated software.
The winners were selected by the CATCON jury consisting of Shunji Murai and Armin Gruen from the Council, Deren Li and Kohei Cho from the Commission VI. The CATCON awards were given to the winners, with a total of 6000SF donated by PASCO International to ISPRS. The winners were as follows.

 Gold Award(2500SF): LDIP and ORTO (software for photogrammetry education)by Dr. Joachim Hohle , Denmark(http://www.i4.auc.dk/jh)
 Silver Award(2000SF): WinASEAN (a software for remote sensing data analysis)
             by Dr. Nguyen Dinh Duong, Vietnam(ftp://ftp.tric.u-tokai.ac.jp/outgoing/catbin/WinASEAN)
 Bronze Award(1500SF):GeoStar (a GIS software) by Dr. Gong Jianya, China
 Bronze Award: RADARSAT Sample Images CD-ROM by RADARSAT International

3. Who could nominate to CATCON ?
Anyone who planed to register to the ISPRS congress had the right to nominate one's software, WWW contents or dataset to the contest on free of charge.
